Paul Saunders is a founder and principal of James River Capital Corp. and affiliated companies (“James River”) and portfolio manager for James River’s financial products. He currently serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of James River Capital Corp. and James River Financial Corp. Mr. Saunders has extensive executive-level experience in the management of alternative investments.
Paul’s interest in finance began when he received his B.A. in Economics from the University of Virginia in 1977. Paul went on to earn his M.B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1979.
After graduation, Mr. Saunders joined Warburg Paribas Becker’s Corporate Finance Department in 1979. He worked in the Commodity Department of A.G. Becker from 1980 to 1983.
From 1983 to December 1994, he was Director of Managed Accounts and Commodity Funds at Kidder, Peabody & Co. (“Kidder”). In 1989 he became a Managing Director of Kidder and a member of Kidder’s Management Council.

In 1986, Paul became President of KP Futures Management Corp. Upon Paul’s acquisition of KP Futures Management Corp. in 1995, he changed the company’s name to James River Capital Corp.
Mr. Saunders has served as its Chairman and CEO of James River Capital Corp. since 1995. It has flourished under the strategic direction of Mr. Saunders and the executive team. Mr. Saunders’ activity in the alternative investment world is a logical outlet for his lifelong interest in finance. After his early experiences in investment banking, he knew he wanted to move into a financial field where meritocracy, not hierarchy, dictated his path to success. He found this to be the case in investment and trading, and has excelled in the field ever since.
Mr. Saunders is also passionate about philanthropy. He and his wife of 39 years, Vicki, contribute to a variety of nonprofit organizations each year. He frequently donates to the University of Virginia, his alma mater. In the past, he has supported numerous organizations including the Community Cancer Fund, Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services, the Collegiate School, and Chrysalis.He recently made a large commitment to Goochland Pet Lovers for the construction of a much-needed Goochland County Animal Shelter. The Saunders family also recently launched The Saunders Family Foundation, to further their collective philanthropic goals.
